Before & After : Master Bathroom Edition

Here it is! 1956 meets 2012....

This was such a hard, but rewarding renovation. We did every little step (and misstep) ourselves after full days at work...   demo, stud work, drywall, concrete floors, paint, installing toilets, sinks, faucets, and tile. The only thing we left to the professionals was installing the shower door (with glass that large, you've got to trust the professionals)!

Details here.

  14. Perfect makeover. It is really so beautiful! I'll be sending this link to my husband for inspiration on our bathroom makeover (we have a similar bathroom with 70s blue tile - yuck!)! I love the framed tile too. Nice touch! :)

  17. Found you through YHL. Love your bathroom reno. It's gorgeous!!

  18. Great job! Do you know the dimensions of your shower?

  19. So much better. Your old bathroom had me thinking of a senior's centre restroom for some reason. I actually smiled when I saw the cut out soap dispensers in the wall. It was a smile of nostalgia though.

  20. Wow! A-MAZE-ING!! Found you at YHL. Your bathroom looks so airy and fresh now which is a very nice feeling in any room especially a bathroom. You guys did great! I'm your newest follower :)

  21. Got here from YHL. Great job with the bathroom! It's now my inspiration for my master bath remodel (in 2 years, after a kitchen remodel planned for next year ;p). Yours has almost the same layout as mine (my door is where your window is) and looks like it's about the same size. Just curious - what are the dimensions of you bathroom?

  22. Gorgeous! Want to come do mine next?

  23. This is soooo lovely. When my bathroom was newly renovated I found myself taking the longest showers, not so great for the environment but oh the serenity!

  24. Checking you out from Young House Love... because I totally have the 1950s pink version of that bathroom! Your transformation is AMAZING, and I'm bookmarking for my future wishlist :)

  25. Love your renovation! I'm over from YHL too. I'm considering something very similar for our 1957 master bath.

I'm going to ditto the requests for: dimensions of your shower, dimensions of your room, and any budget info you're willing to share.

  26. Stunning! I would love to do exactly this with our teensy 1978 master bath. I have to admit, though, that while I adore the expansive look of the clear glass shower doors, modesty may prevail...

  27. Love that you kept one of the old tiles. Sush a nice way to remember how far the room has come and all your hard work! Also I love the new floor tiles!

  28. it's beautiful! we are starting the same project, i hope it turns out as well, it's very small but we're gonna make it work. the one thing i wasn't sure about was the shower doors. i didn't know about all clear, no privacy, cleaning etc. but it opens it up so much we'll have to think about it. we also hadn't thought about carting around that big pane of glass!

  29. Hi there, just popped over from YHL - it looks amazing, great job!!! Did you tile the floor of the shower yourself? Did you have one of those premade bottoms to cover or did you have to angle the floor towards the drain before hand? Just looking for some DIY guidance.
    Thanks!

  30. You did an amazing job! Excited to be a new follower to your blog and keep up with your progress! We just bought our first home, so I am loving reading blogs like yours :)

  31. Thanks for all the love!

Christina, we angled the cement and then tiled ourself. Tiling is fun (I think) but the concrete was disastrous. I'd recommend a pre-made bottom if we ever attempt that again! :)

Sally, Meredith & Powerpuff, our whole bathroom is about 12'x5' and the shower is more like 4'x5' (but, I need to get out the tape-measure to be sure). We budgeted (incorrectly, of course) for about $2000, but it ended up being closer to $3,000. 34. Love the beadboard! This is so gorgeous - it gives me some more courage and inspiration to tackle our own circa 1959 bathroom!

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is amazing! Your bathroom actually seems like it would appear larger, since you put in glass doors. Awesome, congrats!

  36. The change is amazing! I have a seafoam green with jet black trim circa 1953. Your bathroom is my dream transformation!

  37. Wow, that's almost the exact layout of our bathroom we're in the process of remodeling.

Although ours won't be quite as extensive since there are lots of other things we need to do to the house as well.

  38. Wow, you did such a great job. Inspiration for me to get my butt in gear to do over our bathroom too!
    Thanks for sharing

  39. Wow! That is one huge transformation, dear! Excellent job! Your bathroom’s previous look really seemed like it needed to have some alteration. It’s quite old and depleted. Good thing you guys did a remodeling. Your new bathroom looks way better. It is now fresh and sparkling new. Very, very nice!

  40. You guys did all of these by yourselves? Wow! That’s a lot of work! In all fairness, you all did a great job with the remodeling. The black and white theme is definitely much better than its previous look. Now, your bathroom is brighter and more comfortable, and anyone can have a more relaxing time inside whenever they want.

  41. I came over from Young House Love . . . what a fabulous reno! We are planning a similar updating to our 1957 bathroom and you've given us some great ideas. If you don't mind me asking, did you drywall behind the beadboard or use it in place of drywall?

Again, great job, I know you must be loving it!

    1. We did actually put drywall behind the beadboard. But, we were strategic when putting the pieces of drywall together... the seam was hidden behind the beadboard!
